HOW WE DO THINGS

Let’s talk a little about our processes . . .

WordPress

First, we work exclusively with WordPress self-hosted sites. It’s the most widely used Content Management System (CMS) in the world. When you go to a great website or blog, chances are good it’s running on WordPress.

A self-hosted site is different than a web or blogging service. “Self-hosted” means that you are responsible for setting everything up. The good news is it’s MUCH more powerful and flexible than a service. The bad news is it requires more work and expertise to get things going. Of course, that’s where we come in – we set everything up for you.

With a WordPress self-hosted site you’ll have everything you need to get started. And you’ll be well positioned for the future when your site really takes off and you need more features!

StudioPress

The free WordPress software is awesome and provides a great foundation for your site. But what really makes things stand out is a great theme. This is additional software that interacts with WordPress and gives your site its look & feel along with additional features & capabilities.

We’ve used a number of themes from several different companies. There are many, many themes out there. Some are very powerful and stable, some . . . not so much. There are a handful of top companies who offer great themes, each with certain pros and cons. Designers tend to pick a theme company who offers great products, outstanding support and instills confidence in future offerings. For us, that’s StudioPress.

Currently, StudioPress has around thirty cool themes all based on their powerful Genesis Framework. We can work with any of them, but tend to lean toward a handful. If you go with one of our packages, we’ll likely install a particular theme we really like that’s very powerful, yet provides easy ways to change the look to fit your needs. This is a great choice if you want to learn to make changes for yourself without having to learn any code.

Following are a few examples of StudioPress themes. We can start with one of these and then customize it to fit your needs. Need more of a “corporate” look? A little grunge? How about something bright and cheery? Any of these frameworks can be modified to look significantly different than what you see below. We can even start with a blank slate and design your site from the ground up.

Other Stuff You’ll Need

There are other parts you’ll need to get at least a little involved in during the process. For example, you’ll need to set up your hosting account and purchase a URL. We heartily recommend you do this yourself instead of outsourcing to someone else. That way you’ll maintain control of two very important aspects of your operation. Fortunately, this is easy to do and we’ll help you get it done.

Depending on how you want things to work, you may need to get products or services from other companies like Paypal, Mailchimp, Google and more. We’ll discuss all this with you as we go along and help you decide what you need.

Training

Do you want us to be your “techies” on an ongoing basis? We can do that. We offer several ways to be there when you need us. We’ll talk about that a little more as you get familiar with all this and decide how much you want to do for yourself.

Speaking of doing it yourself, you may decide that some of this behind-the-scenes stuff is kind of fun. We love it! If so, we’ll train you to take care of most things yourself. We can go through basics of WordPress, your theme and even expand out into plugins, analytics and many other areas. We’re in the process of developing specific training materials and you can get tips from the blog posts, but it’s hard to beat personal one-on-one training. We’ll do as much of that as you want.
